Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope you've all had a wonderful festive period and are looking forward to the new term. This is an exciting term for 4VG as there are a number of new activities to look forward to including; swimming lessons at Altrincham leisure centre (a letter will be sent out regarding these in the next few days), coaching sessions with Sport Trafford, our trip to the Longley Lane Recycling Centre and our new Rainforest topic. In the second half of this term we will also be showcasing our performance skills with our wonderful Year 4 play!

I was so impressed with the standard of last term's homework projects about the Ancient Egyptians that I cannot wait to see this term's. I know they will be just as impressive and I look forward to us all sharing these over the next couple of weeks.

Important things to remember

Homework handed out on Fridays

Homework handed in by Wednesday please (latest for marking)

Reading journals handed in on Fridays for marking

PE kits brought in and left in school every day

Water bottles brought in

Healthy Snacks for play time.

Any questions please feel free to come for a chat after school or leave a message with the school office and I can return the call at the end of the day.

Thank you,

Mrs Gourlay :)

Welcome to 4VG!

We have had a wonderful first half term and I hope everyone has enjoyed the half term break.

This half term we will be learning ....

Our first unit in Literacy will be on Poetry and linking it to seasonal events such as Halloween and Bonfire Night.

In Maths we will be continuing to work on core skills such as place value, knowledge of times tables and formal methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Every Wednesday we will challenge ourselves with our Batman Maths - keep on practising at home so you can become a times tables master! We will also be starting our mental maths competition again and seeing how we measure up against the rest of the school!

Our new Science topic for this term will be States of Matter - looking at how objects are made up, their changing states and the water cycle.

After a great start to music and enjoying the hits of Abba, this half term's focus will be a new unit on the Glockenspiels.

We are continuing with our topic of Ancient Egyptians. I was incredibly impressed with the quality of the research homework projects completed over the Summer - well done!

R.E. this half term will be looking at inspirational individuals; we will be learning about their history and their achievements and discussing what we can learn from them and apply in our own lives.

Reminders:

PE kit consists of:

White t-shirt, black shorts/leggings, pumps/trainers for indoor games. Trainers must be worn for outdoor games, and children will have bare feet for dance and gymnastics. Please make sure your child has their named PE kit in school every day.

Our PE lessons will be on a Monday morning and on a Friday afternoon - On Fridays this whole term we will be working on our ball skills with a soccerwise coach!

Please ensure PE kits are in school every day, as our lesson could change depending on the weather.

4VG will start swimming in the Spring Term so I will send our further details nearer the time.

Reading journals:

Children should try to read as much as possible and can be done independently or with an adult but it is always really helpful to discuss what you've read with someone who can ask you some questions about it. Reading journals only need to be signed once a week and are a great way to collect housepoints!

Spellings:

These will be sent home at the start of each half term and spelling tests will take place each Wednesday.

Maths and Literacy homework:

This will be given out each Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday.

On a Thursday morning 4VG will be taught by the lovely Mrs Buckley.

If you have any questions, please feel free to come and see me after school.

We have had a great few weeks here in 4VG. In our topic lessons we have been using drama to imagine what it must have been like to live in Ancient Egypt depending on your position in the social heirarchy! Some of us really enjoyed acting the parts of pharaohs and nobles, where as some of us had less of a great time being farmers and soldiers. Great performances by all....

Welcome back 4VG!!

We are now into the Summer Term of Year 4 and we have lots of lovely things planned for this final term.

English:

Our new topic in Literacy is: Fairy tales and Playscripts. After such a successful Year 4 performance of Cinderella, we will now be writing our own twisted fairy tales and converting them into playscripts after learning about the features that authors use to do this.

Maths

In Maths we will look at number patterns, place value and extend our knowledge of negative numbers. We will develop our skills in the four rules of maths and extend our understanding by applying these to real life problems.

We will continue to build on our times table knowledge (our Batman Maths class challenge is still going strong and every single week we have had at least one member of 4VG move up a level - let's keep this up!!)

We will be working on our understanding of division and how this will enable us to move our learning forward and consider fractions and how these are related to division when solving maths puzzles and problems.

As well as all this wonderful number work, we will also be exploring shape, symmetry and area!

After our amazing trip to Manchester Museum, we will continuing our learning on our fascinating new topic - Ancient Egypt. We will also be linking our Geography and Art work to this topic. Thank you to all of you for such incredible homework projects - you make me very proud with your hard work and enthusiasm :)

Science

Image result for human body

In Science we will explore the human body, looking closely at the digestive system and how it works as well as thinking about our teeth and how to keep them clean and healthy.

P.E.

We are lucky to have not one, but TWO fantastic coaches this term. Both P.E. sessions will be on Tuesdays, with Dance in the morning and Cricket in the afternoon. Swimming will be continuing in May and all this activity and building up of skills and fitness should mean 4VG stand a good chance of success in the upcoming Sports Day.

Friday Mornings:

4VG will be taught by the lovely Mrs Buckley on Friday mornings who will continue teaching R.E.

She will also be changing library books every Friday so make sure to bring them in if you want to change them for a new one!

Final reminders:

Swimming will resume as normal on Wednesdays - a list of dates was handed out but if it has gone missing I have lots of spares!

PE will be on Tuesdays - but P.E kits should ideally be in school every day.

Spelling tests will be on Thursdays.

Any questions, come and have a chat with me after school! :)

Happy New Year!

Welcome back everyone, I hope you have all enjoyed your Christmas holidays and are feeling relaxed and rested for the Spring Term. Thank you very much for all the very kind Christmas cards, gifts and well wishes.

This half term our new topic will be France and French speaking countries! We have started this week by researching some of the other countries and learning key facts about them. Our Science topic for this half term is food chains.

In Literacy we will be reading, acting and writing about fables and discussing what we can learn from them.

(See photos above for a snapshot of our wonderful performances acted out this week!)

Please could all children have their reading journals and P.E. kits in each day. Reading journal checks are done every Friday and are a great way to earn house points for your house!

We will have the coaches from Soccerwise teaching us one P.E. lesson a week and we will be starting swimming on the 25th January - a letter will be sent out with further details about this.

Our music focus for this half term is the glockenspiel!

Finally, it is 4VG's class assembly on Friday the 27th January and all parents/carers are very welcome! This will be a great opportunity for us to share some of our learning with you.

As always, any questions please come in and chat with me at the end of the day or leave a message with the office for me.

Thank you,

Mrs Gourlay
