A bespoke curriculum for Heyes Lane

Amazing Manchester is a carefully designed, bespoke mini‑curriculum that gives our pupils a rich and meaningful understanding of the historical and geographical factors that have shaped Manchester into the city it is today - and how it has changed over time. This local study helps pupils gain a deeper understanding of their own lives by exploring the places, people and events that form the identity of their community and city.

We want our pupils to develop a strong sense of identity and pride in both our local community of Timperley and in our wider city of Manchester. While pupils encounter many aspects of Manchester’s rich history, geography and culture throughout our broad and balanced curriculum, we wanted to further enhance this learning through a dedicated study tailored specifically to the children of Heyes Lane.

Our journey begins close to home, exploring Timperley and its unique features, before broadening out into the wider Trafford area. From there, pupils consider Manchester’s position geographically, economically and culturally within the UK, both in the past and today. Learning is guided by powerful Big Questions that help pupils think critically and develop deep historical and geographical understanding, such as:

• What is the significance of Manchester Airport?

• How and why has the Metrolink changed? 

• Why was Manchester significant for the suffragette movement?

• How does the Manchester Bee tell the story of our city?

• How has arts and culture put Manchester on the map? 

• Quarry Bank Mill - Did machines replace our hearts?

By engaging with these questions, children uncover the stories, challenges and achievements that define Manchester - from its industrial roots to its cultural influence, global connections and proud history of activism. Through this project, pupils learn how their city has shaped the world and, equally, how they play a part in shaping its future.
