Curriculum Design
Our Vision for Learning
Our curriculum has been collaboratively designed to inspire every pupil through immersive, creative and memorable learning experiences. It brings together the National Curriculum, our three bespoke curriculums and Heyes Lane’s core beliefs and values to create a dynamic, broad curriculum that is well sequenced, builds year on year and allows for deeper thinking. Our curriculum design and implementation plays a central role in ensuring that Heyes Lane is an exceptional school for everyone. Ambitious and inclusive for all, our curriculum places each child at the heart of their own learning so they can flourish, feel confident in who they are and care deeply about themselves and others. Our curriculum intent is that the school’s five values and five beliefs are at the heart of the curriculum design.
How Children Learn Best
We believe pupils learn most effectively when teaching is active, collaborative and enquiry‑led. Learning is carefully practised and revisited so that knowledge becomes secure and long‑lasting. Explicit vocabulary teaching underpins all subjects, enabling children to communicate confidently and access deeper understanding. We plan learning sequences that build progressively over time, helping pupils make secure connections across subjects while still understanding what it means to be a historian, a scientist, an artist or a geographer. The learning sequence is crafted in a way to allow for progression within each lesson and teaching unit and to reflect the development of knowledge, disciplinary skills and deeper thinking.
Our Design Principles
Every aspect of our curriculum is shaped by seven key principles that drive our planning and practice:
Creative Immersive
Collaborative Enquiry‑Led
Relevant Linked
Memorable
These principles ensure learning is purposeful, coherent and engaging, providing the foundation for experiences that stay with our pupils long after they leave the classroom.
A Dynamic Curriculum for Today’s Learners
Our curriculum reflects an ever‑changing world. Teaching strategies and resources are innovative and designed to give pupils the knowledge and skills they need for their futures. High‑quality texts, immersive drama approaches and opportunities to imagine and innovate help bring learning to life. Enquiry‑led learning through our Themes ignites curiosity and ensures that every lesson inspires and challenges. The outcomes are carefully designed to reflect the knowledge and disciplinary skills learned and are linked to deeper, critical thinking and understanding.
Personal Growth and Character Development
Alongside academic achievement, we prioritise the development of essential character traits such as resilience, creativity, collaboration and a positive, active mind‑set. We nurture trust, honesty and fairness so our pupils grow into ethical, active citizens who want to make the world a better place. By championing individuality and personal growth, we support every child to become the very best they can be.
A Curriculum with Purpose
Our curriculum is designed to help pupils make meaningful connections between knowledge, skills, actions and real‑world purpose. Through rich contexts, immersive experiences and carefully crafted units, children think critically, solve problems, work collaboratively and engage with issues that matter. Assessment involves a combination of a mastery model and an embedded AfL (Assessment for Learning) mindset which enables our pupils to demonstrate their learning through specific outcomes. We believe teaching should inspire – and that learning should last.
