Pupil Leadership: Overview

At Heyes Lane, we believe that every child can lead, influence and make a meaningful contribution to our community. Our bespoke Pupil Leadership programme provides opportunities for pupils to develop confidence, responsibility, teamwork and pride in our school. Through a range of leadership teams, pupils help shape the culture of our school, drive key initiatives and champion the values that matter to us. Central to this is the importance of pupil voice. We value every child’s ideas, perspectives and experiences, and we actively encourage them to share their thoughts on how to make our school an even better place. By listening to our pupils and involving them in decision-making, we empower them to feel heard, respected and truly part of our school community.

Our Pupil Leadership Team is made up of six teams: Reading Leaders, Sports Leaders, Digital Leaders, Green Team Leaders, School Council Leaders and Wellbeing Leaders. Each team has its own priorities for the year and leads projects that make a real difference across the school.

Reading Leaders

Key Priorities
• Care for school reading spaces, ensuring they are tidy, organised and inviting.
• Model positive reading habits and encourage a love of reading.
• Plan and support reading events to promote reading for pleasure.

Projects
• Identifying new books for classrooms.
• Running whole‑school reading events.
• Promoting reading for pleasure across school.

Green Team Leaders

Key Priorities
• Launch eco projects including recycling, litter‑picking, water‑saving initiatives and allotment work.
• Promote daily eco‑friendly choices and care for the school grounds.
• Act as role models for sustainability.

Projects
• Establishing recycling and litter‑picking teams.
• Introducing water butts.
• Developing a school allotment.

Wellbeing Leaders

Key Priorities
• Promote a supportive, welcoming and inclusive school culture.
• Encourage healthy habits, resilience and positive attitudes.
• Bring creativity into wellbeing through projects and displays.

Projects
• Whole‑school worry boxes.
• Wellbeing bench design competition.
• Wellbeing café initiative.

School Council Leaders

Key Priorities
• Gather and represent pupil voice across the school.
• Lead projects that promote positive change and fairness.
• Strengthen school community through collaboration and creativity.

Projects
• School Council noticeboard and “You Said, We Did” updates.
• Secret Student award.
• Lunchtime music initiative.

Sports Leaders

Key Priorities
• Promote inclusive participation in sports and playground games.
• Encourage active play and healthy lifestyles.
• Foster team spirit, creativity and resilience.

Projects
• Supporting EYFS physical development.
• Increasing the variety of school clubs.
• Leading the rollout of new sports equipment.

Digital Leaders

Key Priorities
• Support digital learning by helping staff and pupils use devices safely and effectively.
• Maintain devices by overseeing charging, organisation and care.
• Lead digital creativity and online safety initiatives.

Projects
• Digital art challenge.
• “App of the Month” recommendations.
• Online safety assembly.
